18-year-old charged with murder

SOUTHERN PINES - A Southern Pines man has been charged with first-degree murder.

Claudio Daniel Castillo, 18, was arrested Saturday after police found Wilbaldo Balbuena, 31, at 1225 Central Drive with a head injury, according to a news release from the Southern Pines Police Department..

Lt. Rodney Hardy said Balbuena died while being flown to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Police believe he was hit in the head with a shovel.

Hardy said officers responded to a 911 call made by a third party at 1:54 a.m. at Castillo's home at a mobile home park. Balbuena also lived in the park, Hardy said.

Castillo is being held in the Moore County Detention Center without bail.
